Hello! We’re Maschinen-Mensch, an independent game studio founded in 2014 in Berlin, Germany. We made Curious Expedition 1 & 2 and Codecks.io.
We are working on a new game IP set in imaginative caves of an alien world, filled with peculiar creatures & vegetation. Our studio's expertise is procedural generation, tightly woven into gameplay, and with this new title we will expand on our previous experience and deliver one of the most sophisticated procedural worlds ever seen in a game.
We are looking for an engaged Environment Artist that wants to dive all into building a lush organic world full of life. You will be part of a small, agile team and will work together with the Art Director and the rest of the art team to produce both organic objects and hard surface assets such as plants, geology, architectural structures and mechanics.
We are working in a semi-realistic style and are looking for someone that is curious and willing to adapt their knowledge to the style of the game. Required is that you have previous experience working as an Environment Artist, that you enjoy problem-solving, working in a team, creating new worlds and that you like to work self-sufficiently.
Your responsibilities:
- Work closely with the other members of the art team to develop and drive the artistic vision of the game
- Create organic and hard surface environment assets that work within design specifications and performance needs
- Be a driving force in the setup of the texture and material pipeline for environment objects
- Implement and iterate on assets in the game engine, taking in feedback from the rest of the team
- Keep up with the latest technical development in the environment art field and share your knowledge with the team
- Collaborate with Game Design, Level Design, VFX and Tech Art
Requirements:
- Living in or willing to relocate to Germany
- +2 years of experience working as an environment artist for games
- Portfolio demonstrating your artistic ability and knowledge of the modeling processes - hi-res sculpting, baking textures and material/shader setup in a real-time render engine
- Proficiency with industry standard modeling tools, preferably Blender
- Great texturing skills and experience with PBR & materials and the Substance Suite
- Experience working with Unreal Engine
- Good communication skills and the ability to work well within a team
- Experience working with version control
- Fluent in English
Nice to have:
- Interest in procedural content generation
What we offer:
- A relaxed, family-friendly, no crunch policy working environment
- Being part of a small, diverse, international team
- Competitive salary
- 25 days paid yearly vacation
- The opportunity to work on a brand-new game and IP from an early stage
Working remotely is possible from anywhere within Germany. If you’re based in Berlin (or willing to relocate) that’s definitely a plus, so that we can work together in person. Our studio is located at Saftladen, an indie game collective and co-working space for game developers that we co-founded in 2015.
We particularly encourage applications from women, people with disabilities, people of colour, and other groups that are underrepresented throughout the game industry.
Earliest start date: June 2023
